Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) – Bhutan’s Path to Responsible Tourism
The Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) is a daily fee that every international traveler contributes when visiting Bhutan. Introduced to encourage responsible tourism, the Sustainable Development Fee Bhutan helps protect the environment, preserve cultural traditions, and support community development. Since Bhutan opened to tourism in 1974, visitors have helped shape its progress toward sustainable growth.
Why Bhutan Introduced the SDF?
Bhutan established the Sustainable Development Fund to balance tourism growth with environmental protection. The SDF Bhutan ensures that tourism benefits local people and helps maintain the kingdom’s pristine landscapes. Moreover, it supports projects that improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure, creating long-term value for both citizens and travelers.
Updated Updated Fee Structure for Travelers
Travelers must pay the SDF Bhutan as part of their visa application. The Bhutan SDF cost was revised in 2023 to make travel more accessible while preserving sustainability goals.
For International Visitors:
US$100 per person, per night for adults
US$50 per person, per night for children aged 6–12
No fee for children under 6
For Regional Visitors (India, Bangladesh, Maldives):
Nu. 1,200 per person, per night (or equivalent in INR)
Nu. 600 per night for children aged 6–12
Free for children below 6
How the SDF Supports Bhutan’s Future?
Funds collected through the Sustainable Development Fund Bhutan directly improve Bhutan’s infrastructure and services. They support airport upgrades, waste management, and tourism facilities across the country. In addition, part of the fund goes toward public welfare programs such as free education and healthcare, ensuring every citizen benefits from tourism.
Furthermore, the SDF Bhutan plays a key role in protecting Bhutan’s environment. It finances carbon offset projects, forest conservation, and community-based eco initiatives. Thanks to these efforts, Bhutan proudly remains the world’s first carbon-negative country.
Expenses Not Covered by the Fee
The Bhutan daily fee (or SDF) focuses solely on sustainability and community projects. It does NOT include expenses for accommodation, meals, transport, or guides. Travelers should make these arrangements separately through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.
Refund Policy for Travelers
If a visitor cancels or shortens their trip, the SDF Bhutan payment can be refunded by the Department of Immigration. Bank or transfer charges will be deducted from the refund. The process starts once the traveler leaves Bhutan. This ensures transparency while maintaining accountability in fund management.
