Detailed Itinerary - Bhutan Mountain Biking 2026

Day 01. Arrive Paro – Thimphu

Arrival in Paro, Bhutan

  • You will be received by our representative from Bhutan Mystical Tour at the airport and drive Thimphu city.

  • On the way to Thimphu stop to see Tamchog Monastery, built by Thangthong Gyalpo also known as Lama Chazampa, meaning the Iron Bridge Builder in the 1500.A.D. He built 108 bridges across Tibet and Bhutan, out of which 8 were built in Bhutan. 

  • On reaching Thimphu, drive uphill to Buddha Dordenma Statue. It is made of bronze and measures 169 ft. in height. You can get a spectacular view of Thimphu valley from this point.

  • Next, visit to National Memorial Chorten, a monument dedicated to the Third King of Bhutan, His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

  • Later, head to Tashichho Dzong (Fortress), which houses the throne room of the king and the offices of the government.

Day 02. Thimphu sightseeing

  • As the sun rises over Thimphu, the ride starts in Kabesa village, passing traditional Bhutanese homes. Cyclists follow winding roads through terraced fields, streams and greenery, gradually climbing toward Cheri Monastery on the mountainside.

  • After the climb, cyclists descend back to Thimphu city, enjoying panoramic valley views and Bhutan’s natural and spiritual beauty.

  • In the afternoon, the ride toward Changlimithang Archery Ground will take you through the heart of Thimphu. Upon arrival, you’ll be immersed in the lively atmosphere of a traditional Bhutanese archery match. Archers, clad in colorful attire, will release arrows with impressive precision, their movements accompanied by cheers and lively banter.

  • In the evening, stroll around the Thimphu town.

Day 03. Thimphu – Punakha sightseeing

  • The ride from Thimphu to Punakha will take you on a thrilling journey through Bhutan’s stunning landscapes, with the road winding up to the Dochula Pass. As you pedal, the climb will become steeper, but the reward will be the breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks emerging in the distance.

  • At Dochula Pass, you’ll make a short stop to catch your breath and admire the 108 chortens, or stupas, set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The cool mountain air and panoramic vistas will offer a moment of peace and reflection before continuing the descent toward Punakha.

  • The ride to Chimi Lhakhang will take you through the scenic Sopsokha village, passing lush rice fields and farmhouses. Arriving at the temple, nestled on a gentle hilltop and surrounded by blooming flowers and fluttering prayer flags, you’ll be embraced by the peaceful and serene atmosphere.

  • After visiting Chimi Lhakhang, the ride will continue toward the magnificent Punakha Dzong. As you approach, the sight of the grand fortress, nestled at the confluence of two rivers, will take your breath away. Once there, you’ll have the opportunity to explore this architectural masterpiece, its intricate carvings and peaceful courtyards, immersing yourself in the rich history of one of Bhutan’s most revered landmarks.

Day 04. Punakha – Gangtey sightseeing

  • The ride from Punakha to Gangtey Valley passes traditional villages, grazing cattle, and rugged alpine landscapes. Cyclists ascend to Gangtey Valley, enjoying vast meadows and views of Gangtey Monastery perched on the hill.

  • On reaching visit Gangtey Gompa founded in 1613. It is a Nyingma monastery and is affiliated to other Nyingma monasteries including Tamshing in Bumthang.

  • Next, ride downhill where you will be able to see the rare, Black-Necked Crane, especially during wintertime. For more information on this magnificent bird, you can also visit the Crane Information center, under the supervision of the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature.

  • In the evening, explore the valley. The ride offers a unique opportunity to observe local life, with farmers working their fields, children playing along the roads and wooden houses nestled among the greenery. Stopping in the villages, you can experience Bhutanese hospitality firsthand, making the journey not just scenic but culturally enriching.
