On arrival at Paro, your guide from Bhutan Mystical Tours will welcome you at the airport and drive you to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. 

Along the way, stop at Tamchog Monastery, built by Thangthong Gyalpo, also known as Lama Chazampa, the 15th-century “Iron Bridge Builder.” He constructed 108 bridges across Tibet and Bhutan, with 8 in Bhutan. 

Upon reaching Thimphu, drive uphill to the Buddha Dordenma Statue (lalso called Kuensel Phodrang), a massive bronze Buddha measuring 169 ft. Enjoy panoramic views of Thimphu Valley from this vantage point.

Next, visit the National Memorial Chorten, a monument dedicated to the Third King of Bhutan, His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

Overnight in Thimphu

Start your day with a visit to the National Zoo, home to the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal.

On the way back, stop at Dupthop Lhakhang, one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.

Next, explore the National Library, which houses a vast collection of ancient texts and scriptures, a treasure for anyone interested in Bhutanese history and culture.

Continue to the National Institute for Zorig Choesum, the school of 13 traditional arts. Here, Bhutanese painting and sculpture traditions are preserved, including Thangkas, sacred Buddhist scrolls painted or embroidered on high-quality fabric.

Just a short walk away, visit the Folk Heritage Museum, showcasing Bhutanese rural heritage and craftsmanship.

Drive further into the city to the National Postal Museum, where you can create personalized Bhutanese stamps using your photo or the photo of your loved ones in just 5 minutes.

If your visit falls on a weekend, stop at the Centenary Farmers Market. This bustling market is perfect for experiencing local life and shopping for handicrafts, fresh produce, and souvenirs.

Overnight in Thimphu

The drive from Thimphu to Punakha takes about 2.5 hours and offers one of Bhutan’s most scenic journeys.

Stop at Dochula Pass (3,116 m) to admire panoramic views of the Higher Himalayas, especially stunning at sunrise and sunset.

Continue to the Rhododendron Botanical Garden, home to 46 species of rhododendrons and diverse flora and fauna.

En route, visit Chimi Lhakhang, also called the “Temple of Fertility,” built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, the 15th-century “Divine Madman.”

In Punakha, explore the Punakha Dzong, considered Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it sits between the Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River). It preserves war materials captured during battles with Tibet.

Just five minutes away, walk across the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in Bhutan, for spectacular valley views.

Proceed to Phobjikha Valley on a scenic drive through lush valleys, terraced fields, and charming villages.

Overnight in Gangtey 

Visit Gangtey Gompa, built in 1613, one of Bhutan’s main religious seats and a key center of the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism.

Explore the stunning Phobjikha Valley, home to the rare Black-Necked Crane, especially during winter. Learn more about this magnificent bird at the Crane Information Center, managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature.

After exploring the valley, drive back to Paro, enjoying the scenic landscapes along the way.

Overnight in Paro

Start your day with a visit to Rimpung Dzong (Fortress), also called the “Heap of Jewels,” built in 1646. It serves as the center of administrative and religious authority in the Paro Valley.

Next, visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower built in 1656 and renovated in 1968, now housing the National Museum.

Continue to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, also known as the Fortress of the Victorious Drukpas, located 16 km up the valley. Built in 1647 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the Dzong was partially destroyed by fire and now stands as a reminder of Bhutan’s historic victories. On a clear day, enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Jomolhari (7,314 m).
